It rained here the other day. It also took me about an hour longer than usual to get to work that day. This is a funny state to drive in. It reminds me of this old Dave Barry column I read, where he is talking about his dogs. I can’t find it online anywhere, but part of the joke was that to a dog, every trip out the back door in the morning is a totally new experience. Every morning the dog sees its owner and acts like they haven’t seen each other for years.
That is how it is when it rains out here. Heaven forbid that it snow. Its like these drivers wake up in the morning–keep in mind these are people who drive daily in the nation’s second worst city for traffic–and if it is raining, like Dave Barry’s dogs, they act like they are experiencing it for the first time.
“What’s this?” they ask, “Water? On the road? Is it a flood? Wait! Its also falling from the sky! I must exersize caution and drive 20 miles per hour.” And if it snows, they drop down to 10.
Here is just another random picture of Whitney and Mason. They like to take pictures of themselves.

I finally have got the pictures ready from remodeling the bathroom. The bathroom wasn’t in terrible shape, not like the kitchen where the floor had been
warped, but it was clear that attention to detail was not the highest priority for whoever previously did the bathroom.
The original linoleum had been replaced, but not very well. For instance, the didn’t take the toilet out to put in the new
linoleum, the just kind of cut it like you would if you were laying sod.
The same theory held around the edges, where they didn’t take off the molding around the floor. They just cut as close to the edge as they could they put this edging-wood around the bottom to hold it down.
They also at one point had a phone installed in the bathroom, which I really don’t see the need for.
Anyway, beyond that the faucet wasn’t straight, and the fan was noisy and also crooked. So we just put down some tile and painted and freshened some things up, with Heidi doing most of the work and me helping with the tiles. All in all, it turned out pretty nice.

As you may have noticed, there was a big snowstorm along the East cost this past weekend. Now normally, I think the weather out here is kind of mild. And they cancel school for what I would consider fairly mild snowstorms. But it can put down some moisture here when it wants to, and this weekend was one of those times.
We got almost a foot of snow here at the house. Whitney and Mason loved it. It started snowing Saturday night and when we woke up Sunday there was a ton of snow. Church got cancelled, and Whitney didn’t have school on Monday.
Even though it snowed a lot, it also melted quickly. We are back down to almost no snow, which is just a testament to the mild weather here. If Idaho got a foot of snow, it wouldn’t melt in a day.
Anyway, while they were inside, the kids just played dinosaurs and stuff. Mason’s friend Abigail came over and they were playing dinosaurs in Mason’s room when Whitney came in and asked what they were doing. Mason said, “We’re practicing the Civil War! With dinosaurs!” Like he has any idea what the Civil War is.

Whitney and Mason went to Michaels the other day with Heidi and saw some exciting toys. (They actually have really neat toys for young kinds there.) Anyway, as usual whenever they go anywhere they think they want every toy they see, but sometimes the really do see something they like. In this case, it was a knitting machine for Whitney and Mason saw some
sharks.
The funny thing with Mason and sharks is that whenever he plays with sharks he tries to make the music from Jaws, only he’s never seen the movie but somehow knows how to try to make the music. I think he got his idea from Shark Tale.
So anyway, he talked about wanting those sharks for days after he saw them, and Whitney kept talking about the knitting machine. So finally Heidi told them we could go back and they could but them with their own money.
We went in and Mason picked out his sharks right away. Whitney couldn’t find the knitting machine, so while she was looking for it Mason grabbed a bunch of the dinosaurs they also had they and sat down on the floor to play, cause he wasn’t going to waste time.
Finally Whitney found her machine and they both bought them. Mason was kissing his sharks on the way home, and named the great white shark “Boss”. He also made me tell him the story about when I saw a hammerhead shark in Hawaii because one of his sharks is a hammerhead.

Nothing too much going on tonight, just studying and thought I’d put up another old video.
Tonight, when I was putting Whitney to bed she told me she needed some more water. It was dark in her room so I asked her where her water cup was. She said she didn’t know, and then told me to come over by her. She reached up, while trying to hide her cup in her hand and pretended to pull it out of my ear. “It was in your ear,” she said. It made me laugh.
This is Whitney’s fifth birthday party. (1237kb)

Today was Whitney’s awards assembly at school, and it covered the first half of the school year.
She got several awards, including an Accelerated Reading award and the “Superstar” award. She was pretty excited about it. We are also pretty happy for her. She loves school.
Whenever I come home at night from school, if Mason is still awake he sees me first because I have to walk by his bedroom door first. Every time, he stops me and tells me to wait. Then he runs into our bedroom and tells Heidi, “Mommy, someone to see you…” and then he gets me out in the hall and leads me into the room and says, “Surprise!” If she sees me first he then tells her, “Mommy, forget that you just saw Dadu,” and does his routine anyway.
