We had another, rather unexpected snowstorm today. It was a really warm day on Saturday, so much so that Mason and Whitney went hiking with one of their friends. The wind was blowing but it was not a bad day.
But during the night it got really cold and started to snow, and we ended up with several inches of snow, although the wind had stopped. It snowed enough that church was canceled, and school is also canceled for Monday.
So we went outside and played in the snow for a couple of hours today. Mason was out there for a long time. I built a big snowman, which we converted into a fort/igloo because it fell over.
Mason stocked it up with pretzels and chocolate, so I’m wondering if that stuff will be there tomorrow, since we’ve had a fox running around the house lately. Click for more pictures. (more…)
The other day me and Whitney were sitting at the table eating breakfast and she looked at the mountain and said, “Hey, a deer!” Sure enough, there was a deer at the top of our hill, about 25 or 30 yards away. We watched it for a while and then a baby deer came out beside it.
They just grazed along the top of the hill for about twenty minute or so until they wandered off out of view.
After the last snowstorm we had, school was canceled for several days. The storm began as rain, the switched to snow, then back and forth between the two. Finally, it got over and then the temperature dropped quite a bit, so all the slush and snow and ice got frozen solid. There was a few inches of the stuff all over the yard and hills so the kids went out and played on it.
We went sledding at a nearby hill a couple days later and if it hadn’t melted before then it would have been like a bobsled track. As it was, we still got going pretty fast and the kids had a good time.
This was the first snowstorm we had this winter Although it only ended up snowing an inch or two, Whitney still got out of school so was very happy. It started snowing on a Sunday, and the minute we got home from church Mason had to go outside and play in the snow. He jumped on the trampoline and climbed the hill.
Since then, it has snowed one more time, resulting in Whitney getting out another day for snow, even though once again there was less than an inch of snow. The road do get slick here, and because they are so narrow it can be dangerous to drive on them.
A couple of weeks ago we went to a George Mason University Basketball game. I get in free with my student ID, and we thought it would be fun for the kids. We were half right.
Mason had a really good time and has told me several times since, “I’m glad your team won, Daddy.” Whitney played Brickbreaker on my BlackBerry and consumed Dippin’ Dots, the Ice Cream of the Future.
I think both kids actually enjoyed getting out and doing something fun and different, and it was kind of neat to go to the game. They have a pretty nice stadium and played a decent game. (more…)
