September 2007

school07Although they’ve been in school for a few weeks now, Heidi did actually take the standard “First Day of School” pictures before they headed out the door.

They started out riding the bus but that wasn’t so good, because it took forever and their bus is very crowded. So for now they are walking to school, but if the bus situation improves they may go back to that.

I also gave each of them a ride to (more…)

We managed to catch another snake a couple weeks ago. At first I thought it was the same worm snake we had caught earlier this year, but the ring around the neck was different, and this one had a yellow belly. So although we aren’t quite sure what kind of snake it was, it was relatively friendly and didn’t bite much.

Once again, Mason and Whitney had a good time playing with it. Mason probably would have kept it forever if we let him, but all good things have to come to an end and eventually we let it go. Hopefully it won’t grow too much bigger and get into the house or anything.

I put it into the cooler to keep for a while, but Heidi didn’t think that was a very good idea. The funny thing was, when I was washing the cooler out after having had the snake inside it, Mason came up to me and said, “Don’t worry, Dadu…I had to do the same thing after I put a turtle in there.”

rabbitThe other night when me and Heidi were driving home from dinner, we saw a rabbit sitting in the middle of the road. I got out and realized it had been hit by a car or something, cause it wasn’t moving. So I caught it and we took it home. Whitney and Mason were pretty excited to have a captured rabbit, but were worried that it would die from its injuries. Since we weren’t going to take it to the vet, we just hoped for the best.

Whitney and Mason got it some food, water and something soft to lie on and we put it in a bigger box and left him overnight. The next morning, Whitney got up bright and early and lo and behold he was moving around a lot. In fact, later that morning he figured out how to get out of the box and escaped, so we are thinking that he healed up pretty quickly.

A few weeks ago we went down to Virginia Beach for the day. We’ve been meaning to go all summer, and just so happened to go on a great day with great weather. The trip down wasn’t too long, and the kids really enjoyed it. The water was really warm and the waves were big. The only bad thing is that I forgot some of the sand toys, but the kids still had a good time. They spent a good portion of the day just playing at the edge of the water, waiting for the waves to knock them over. Quite a few times the waves were so big that they would carry the kids aways down the beach. They would say under the waves for quite a while, also. It was a good time.

We decided to have a bonfire after all. We quit burning stuff for a while because it seems to be bad for the lawn. But then again, everything we do to the lawn results in more weeds and less grass, so at a minimum we were basically just burning weeds.

Anyway, a bunch of people from work came down and we had a BBQ and had a really fun time. The only thing that would have made it better would have been a spider feeding, but that didn’t happen. We did catch a bird though. Kind of weird, I just grabbed it. The kids loved the fire, and we tried to cook s’mores but the fire was way too hot, so we cooked them on the grill in tin foil.

Me and Mason went out one night and went bowling, ate at McDonalds and ate ice cream at Baskin Robbins. He planned it all and wrote it down and talked about it for the whole week. When the day came, the helmet I had ordered for the kids had got there so he got to go on the motorcycle. He had a very good time, and you can see he was excited to go.
