2008

A long time ago, like back in 1987, say, I had some pet guinea pigs. At one point, for reasons that I no longer remember, one of them died. (Well, all of them obviously did, eventually). Again, I don’t remember why I did this, but I attempted to mummify this particular one. I wrapped him in something, and built a little coffin for him. I used a metal lid, writing something on it as a commemoration. I paced off from the flag pole and started digging.

Flash forward to a couple weeks ago when we were in Springfield. I suddenly remembered what I had done and grabbed my dad’s metal detector. Abby and Whitney were the ones who actually found it with the metal detector, but all of the grandkids were there and watching as I dug up the old box.

Amazingly, there was still writing on the lid, (more…)

The kids went to their swim team awards assembly and party a couple of weeks ago. Whitney got the coaches choice award for her age group and they each got a trophy as well. They had a good time, and it worked out well because last year Mason got a coaches choice award.

Afterwards, we all went to the swimming pool for a party at night. It was pretty fun. The kids liked swimming at night and there were a lot of people there, so they had a good time. (more…)

We see skinks quite frequently out here, and during the summer they can get pretty big. But they are really fast runners, and you can’t grab them by the tail, and I honestly am kind of skittish about them biting me, so we have only managed to capture a couple at intervals few and far between.

The other day we finally caught another one, and yes, its tail fell off. The kids like the skinks because the capture of the skink is a rare enough occurrence that they don’t get to play with them very often. Anyway, this one was small enough to not bite anyone and so it was pretty harmless.

As a side note, you can see how humid this day was because the camera flash was capturing the moisture in the air.

So this is the REAL final swim meet. The other one was the final regular season meet. The kids qualified for several events each, and when we got there Mason also got asked to swim in a relay. So he swam that as well. Both of them did pretty well. The day was really hot and it was pretty humid.

Mason took fourth place in the backstroke, which is his best event. He was on a pretty good pace in the freestyle as well, but his goggles filled up with water. Whitney beat a few people in her age groups as well, so all in all it was a good day. But the kids were glad to be done.

Here are some photos from the run and kayaking.

Dear Grand Teton National Park,

I’m writing to alert you to a hazardous condition I encountered this past weekend while running the South Fork of Cascade Canyon trail. The excessive, spectacular nature of the scenery caused me to become distracted, which in turn caused me to kick a root with extreme force. Fortunately, I was able to recover and continue my run without need of an official evacuation or piggy-back ride from my friend, Nate. However, I suggest that, in the public interest, you consider limiting the amount of incredible mountain scenery to avoid accidents like mine in the future.
Thank you,
Steve Bohrer (more…)
