May 2008

I’ve been meaning to write an update for a while now, so here goes.  It’s been 4 months since the surgery, and my vision is perfect.  It’s actually been perfect in both eyes for about a month and a half now.  After about a month, my right eye was really good and the left was somewhat blurry.  I tried my wife’s (weak) glasses, and they didn’t make a difference, so I figured it wasn’t a correction problem.

If you’re thinking of PRK, you’d better have a patient disposition.  Seriously, you have to be able to put your blurry vision out of your mind and not obsess for several months, and that’s not an easy thing to do.  Fortunately, I was able to do that for the most part.  The docs will tell you it could take up to 6 months, and it’s easy to say yeah, yeah, whatever.  I’m special, it won’t take that long.  Just be patient

By the end of the second month, the vision in my left eye had steadily improved until it was better than the right.  Somewhere about this time, the vision in the right eye got worse, so now I had to learn to let my left eye be dominant.  That was pretty irritating, since it had been good up till then.  Then, sometime in the third month, the right eye came into focus.  It was so gradual I hardly noticed.  At my 3 month exam I saw 20/15 in both eyes.

I haven’t had too many problems with dry eyes.  I’ve always had allergies and itchy eyes in the spring, and this year was no exception, but it was nice not to have to deal with contacts or glasses too.  I tried a couple of eye drops, which didn’t really work.  I do still use the plain lubricating drops in the morning, when it feels like my eyelids are sticking to my eyeballs.

Bottom line, I couldn’t be any happier with my experience.  Camping, skiing, swimming, everything is better.  I’m glad I chose PRK over LASIK, and I’d make the same choice again.  One thing I learned is not to underestimate the degree of discomfort and recovery time involved in PRK.  I figured I was special and would heal faster with less pain.  Not true.  And be patient.

Trip to the MuseumAnother day that Dan and Amy were here we went to the Museum of Natural History and the Air and Space Museum. These museums can be a lot of fun when they aren’t crowded, the Air and Space one has a fair number of cool things for the kids to do, and we hoped that being on a weekday when school was still in session that it wouldn’t be crowded, but they both were pretty busy. Plus, they were filming “Night at the Museum Two” in the Air and Space museum, so a lot of the fun exhibits were closed off, and we only got to see a bunch of extras, which I took a picture of.

As usual, the highlight of the day was a trip to the gift shop, where we paid five dollars for a bag of rocks. That’s right, a bag of rocks. They are (more…)

Dan and Amy were able to come out here for a few days, so we made some plans to do a couple fun things. They flew in Saturday night, so we just hung out on Sunday and tried to catch some lizards, with no luck (due to unfavorable weather conditions). However, they did find a lake and amused themselves by throwing sticks into it until it started raining on us.

On Monday we went to the Zoo, and had a really good day. The weather was perfect, and the animals were mostly out and about.

Whitney made it a point to show us the flamingos and the sea lions. One of the gorillas didn’t like people very much, and when Dan was looking at it it ran up to the glass and started pounding on it, right in front of him. It did the same thing to another person, too.

We got ice cream and were pretty tired out by the time the day was over. There are quite a few pictures after the break. (more…)

Whitney had a Mothers Day Piano Recital. She has been practicing for quite a while and did another good job. This one was held at a church here in Stafford.

Me and Whitney went to a Girl Scout Father Daughter date last week. It was pretty fun. We went miniature golfing. The only trouble was that there was a lot of girls there and they had everyone come at once, so there was an hour long line just to get to the first tee.

So me and Whitney went to Baskin Robbins and got some ice cream. Her favorite is chocolate, so she had a big ice cream cone of chocolate ice cream. Afterwards, we went back to the golf place (we were on my motorcycle, by the way, which is a lot of fun to take out on nights like that) and played. Whitney ended up winning 71-84. She had a lot of fun.

The other picture is of all the tigers watching a movie on Netflix. Me and Heidi just discovered it in the living room one day and thought it was a funny picture.

Sometimes at school the kids get to use the computers. One day when Mason was using one he wrote a story about a dragon. Mason really likes dragons, so I’m sure he could have made his story even longer.

Anyway, he wrote the whole story himself, and sounded out all the words all alone. So I had him read the story. (The last page doesn’t show up for some reason; I’ll have to see if I can fix that.)
