Mason

Sometimes at school the kids get to use the computers. One day when Mason was using one he wrote a story about a dragon. Mason really likes dragons, so I’m sure he could have made his story even longer.

Anyway, he wrote the whole story himself, and sounded out all the words all alone. So I had him read the story. (The last page doesn’t show up for some reason; I’ll have to see if I can fix that.)

Mason had his first T-Ball game of the season last Saturday. He has been pretty excited about it, as opposed to last year, and did really well in the practices. The bad thing is that he didn’t get to bat last, so he didn’t hit any home runs this past game.

He did get to play first base though, which he did pretty well at, and also when he was playing near the pitcher’s mound he got a couple balls hit to him, which he fielded well and threw to first.

View from the tentThis past weekend we packed up and headed out camping. We went to Shenandoah River State Park, which is about 70 miles from here. It only has a few campsites, and no room for trailers, so it has a kind of more rustic than normal feel to it. There aren’t any trash cans, for instance, but there are showers. It is along the banks of the Shenandoah River and is a very nice place to stay.

We got there on Friday and no sooner had gotten the tent set up than it started to rain. And it rained hard. We were all in the tent, trying to not touch the roof or sides which would let the water in. Luckily, the tent repelled most of the water and we only had a few leaks around the corners of the tent, which we soaked up with towels.

The next day more than made up for it, however, because it was a really nice day. The weather was perfect and the sun was shining. We took our rubber boat down the river and had a lot of fun. There were a couple copperhead snakes (more…)

Easter was a good time this year. Once again, the Easter Bunny found us. The kids were a little worried that the Easter Bunny would see Sassy and let her go (yes, we know Sassy is technically a boy but we mostly still call him a her) but that didn’t happen.

The eggs and candy were hidden pretty well, and there is still one egg that I saw the other day, so sometime this summer the kids will find a good surprise.

A couple weeks after Mason and Whitney’s award assembly, Mason was chosen as a Student of the Month. Each class chooses one or two students who demonstrate a particular trait during the month and get to go to a special breakfast one morning. Whitney was chosen last year.

Mason’s trait was courage. The other students in the class then write (or draw pictures, since this is kindergarten) about how that student shows that trait. Mason was (more…)

Mason has watched Whitney rack up all sorts of awards at school since we’ve been here, and this semester was his first chance to get an award of his own. Luckily, he was chosen as a Superstar Student so he got an award. There weren’t very many kids chosen out of his class, so I’m glad he was one of them.

Whitney also got a couple awards; she was chosen because she got two good report cards last semester. Pictures after the break. (more…)
